Getting Excitement into Small Groups!

Getting Excitement into Small Groups!

One of the many issues that we face in getting people into small groups is motivation. Most people think that small groups are an addition to an already busy life. Seeing the value in a small group can be tough to convey. Part of the issue stems from our problem TO DO what the bible actually says so that we can bring glory it God.

If Hebrews 10:25 is the very words of God then we should “not give up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing” and if as a community of believers we are to follow the instructions of Acts 2, the corporate worship at church on a Sunday is like the culmination of a weeks worth of community. It is like the game of football that we get to play at the end of a busy week of preparation. Sunday empowers, equips, challenges and convict us. Small groups seeks to maintain that momentum through the week, it also help develop deeper relationships with our Christian Brothers and Sisters.

Our motivation here is to make Jesus’ name more famous, and to enjoy the fruits of fellowship Psalm 133 tells us that meetings in unity is a gift from God. Therefore small groups is a highlight for the week. We should be motivated and excited to have regular small groups. This is something we need to DEMONSTRATE to others in our group. Regular communication and contact with your group is vital to get them feeling excited about small group.

Our group previously would email regularly prayer requests, as well as reminders for small group. We also asked that people would respond to let us know if they were coming, this was helpful with a snack schedule. The goal here is to be EXCITED to meet, and that excitement can then be infectious for the rest of the group.

So as you start to get members to your groups through sign-ups. Remember that you need to do these three things to help motivate people to join your small group (DNA Group).

1) Be Excited, and convey your excitement about the small group to your team. If you are excited to meet so will other people.

2) Regularly be in communication with them. Our group has used email, if you need to call some folks then do that as well. At minimum send out a weekly small group reminder.

3) Follow-up with new people. If someone signs up for your group, be sure to contact them and make them feel welcome. I do this with a phone call, if I can’t get them on the phone, I send them an email. My goal though is to talk to the person and make sure they feel welcomed!

4) Pray! If you are not regularly praying for your group, and in your group…then how do you expect God to show up! As part of meeting together Jesus must be at the centre, so like scripture says, PRAY ABOUT EVERYTHING!
